The sun sets below the Brooklyn hill and casts a stunning light on Matiu Somes Island, at the foot of the Tararua Ranges.
In World War 1, Matiu Somes Island used to be a quarantine for returning soldiers with Influenza. You can still visit the island today where the quarantine centre still stands.
The island is predator free and is home to some of New Zealand's most iconic native animals and insects, including the Giant Cave Weta, and the Little Blue Penguin.
